Josef Salvat is a singer-songwriter born in Australia but currently living in London. His music is often classed as pop, but don’t think boy bands and Taylor Swift because you would be way off. Think more along the lines of James Blake.
Josef isn’t really a complete unknown on the music scene. After his first demo, This Life, was put on soundcloud earlier this year there was a fair bit of hype surrounding him.
Hype after one track is a dangerous thing but Josef has just released Hustler and I think if anything it shows he can live up to the initial buzz.
So what does he sound like? Well the two songs on Josef’s soundcloud are really quite different but I’d say both songs are quite dark. Josef’s most recent track, Hustler, has simple piano parts and vocals but the use of layering makes the song sound complex, building up and dropping back to a simple piano part and vocals.
In reality though, the only way you’re going to know what his music is like is if you have a listen, so if you haven’t gone to his soundcloud yet then sort that out now. Check out his tracks and some of the great remixes on there too.
If you want to know more, find Josef on Facebook and Twitter.
To say I like IYES would be a massive understatement. Both their demos ‘Glow’ and ‘Lighthouse’ can frequently be heard blaring out of my bedroom.
I say demos… If you check out their soundcloud, these demos have notched up over 70,000 plays.
The duo, currently residing in Brighton, are often compared to Purity Ring and The XX. The dreamy vocals are layered on top of synths and percussion creating an electro pop sound which is addictively good.
Melis is originally from Prague but travelled to England two years ago. She met Josh at a party shortly after arriving and they then formed IYES.
If you want to find out more about IYES find them on twitter or check out their facebook.
Whatever you do, make sure you listen to their demos. I for one hope an album will be in the pipeline soon.
Laurel, or Laurel Arnell-Cullen if we’re going to go with full names, is a beautiful young singer/songwriter.
Laurel is 19-years-old and she has been writing music since she was 12 (yes I did just say 12). Inspired by Laura Marling she learnt the guitar and began gigging in Southampton and Portsmouth winning the Portsmouth News’ ‘Best Solo Act’ in 2011.
After which, Laurel began working with ex Radio 1 house DJ, Dave Spoon, and later on, Nick Halkes, who co-founded the label XL. Since then, she has developed her sound and subsequently she has been attracting a lot of attention with some people dubbing her as the next Lana Del Rey.
To date, Laurel has played along side Lianne La Havas, Ed Sheeran, White Lies and Katy B.
I imagine we’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the future and if her latest demo, Blue Blood, is anything to go by, her debut album will be something pretty special.
If you want to find out more about Laurel, check out her Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud and Tumblr
Holy Esque are a four-piece indie-rock band hailing from Glasgow.
What immediately grabs you when hearing Holy Esque is the distinctive vocals of singer Pat Hynes. There’s a gravely tone to his voice which is incredibly unusual but it really makes them stand out – if you don’t believe me have a listen to some of their songs on soundcloud.
They’ve been around for a couple of years now and in that time they have toured with The Raveonettes, got noticed at SXSW Festival a few weeks ago and they will be playing this years Great Escape Festival too. Two festivals which are great for finding new music.
I imagine we’re going to be hearing a lot more from Holy Esque in the future but in the meantime have a listen to their latest single ‘St’ which was released on the 25th March.
